Momo Mouthpieces from Japan?! Testing the 52E*
Today we're trying out a nice mouthpiece from Momo, a boutique maker in Japan. I originally found their mouthpieces from buying a 60* bass model - which I loved, and decided to source a tenor mouthpiece. I found the 52E* and wanted to try it out - it does some things very well. The * on the mouthpiece stands for the Momo acoustic treatment - it's been tricky to find more info about these pieces but I'll update this as I do.
Specs! This is actually from their euphonium line (no wonder I like it so much!) It has a 25.8 mm inner rim diameter, a 7.1 mm throat diameter, and a very deep cup. With sharp rims, it gives a much tighter feel on the chops than my LI Brass 550E which is similarly a euphonium style mouthpiece with a 25.50 inner rim.
The Momo mouthpiece really locks you into place with a nice sound - it does a lot of things very well. It's on the lighter side, and up there with my favorite mouthpieces.

disclaimer: it is SO HOT today, and my playing feels a little less than normal - welcome to the new normal! Timings in the comments and bottom of the description as well. Today we're trying out the JSV2 from Houghton Horns. This is John Sebastian Vera's Signature mouthpiece, and it looks beautiful and plays great. Caleb wrote this beautiful piece in memorial of his good friend Matt Marks, who was my colleague and friend, that we tragically lost too soon. It was commissioned and recorded by Gerry Pagano, and is a beautiful addition to the bass trombone repertoire. * This work should be performed in an extremely reverberant setting such as a silo or cathedral. If such acoustics are unavailable, the sound s...

The Momo mouthpiece responds very well, with a warm and very precise sound, and it also delivers a wider range of sound with great clarity.
What mouthpiece is that
That’s my LI Brass 550E
Truly an exquisite work of art
Possibly my most honest piece
Gorgeous. Are you going to post a complete video on this one? I have never heard this piece before.
I'm hoping to program it on a recital this upcoming year!
@@WilliamLang Awesome! Looking forward to hearing it.
Sounds incredible! Both the performance itself and the acoustics!
definitely one of the best acoustics i've gotten to play in in the last few years! Duke University also had a beautiful hall on their campus
Yammy sounds good. Screaming good deal.
Fantastic channel. Love your tone. It’s not blatty like so many players these days. Thank you.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you're enjoying it
Do you have any tips for cleaner articulation? Mine always sounds muddy
make sure your air, buzz and tongue are coordinated rather than any one of the three leading the articulation
This video actually really helped my high range...😂
It's funny that all you have to do is lip down... and people make a big deal of it
What’s the black mouthpiece in the back I wanna see that in action!
the one on the left is a LI Brass 550E that I also play in the video
@@WilliamLangi mean the one on the dresser the black one
oh! that's a mouthpiece pouch, not a mouthpiece itself. though it would be a cool shape and color
Update on the mouthpiece! You can find them through Houghton Horns at houghtonhorns.com/products/verus-sebastian-vera-tenor-trombone-mouthpiece-verusjsv the JSV line is from Pickett Brass, not Bob Reeves like I thought!
When did you start playing trombone? I started last summer at 13 and I've been making slow progress when it comes to range, I can only play up to f#4
I started in 3rd grade in public school, took it seriously in 7th, but started practicing hard around 10th/11th grade.
Please teach me whats the technique of carnival vinice for trombone sir.thank you
this movement primarily uses triple tonguing - there's a lot of good exercises and explanation for that in the Arban's book - basically it's a TTK tounging patten (I use ||:tu-tu-ku:||, other people use variations such as ||:ta-ta-ka:||, or ||:da-da-ga:||, or permutations of those like ||:ta-ka-ta:||)
Good playing but it doesn’t sound very good musically
ok
Correct. Also didgeridoo and bending d to b helps!
One problem with using valve for trills is the "clack clack clack clack clack".
True - just needs some oil, wasn't thinking that far ahead
Mans doesn’t drink water to break he drinks valve oil.
true, but it tastes terrible, and i think i need to see a doctor
Farts at some point
( 𝄞´=∀=)ヘンツェの作品か……こんな小奏鳴曲あるんだ! 難しそうだなあwwww
How?
lots of practice! working through all the french etude books (bitsch, boutry, bozza) and premiering a lot of works for trombone also help it look less scary. this took about 10 minutes start to finish to learn and record, and 5-6 of that was forgetting that it needed straight mute 😆
Nice playing
some people have asked me what I do to play high, do I compress my lips, change my embouchure, or manipulate my airstream? I don't do any of those consciously. I think it's more to do with the arch of the tongue, kind of like whistling. but! fwiw, I don't try to manipulate my tongue either. it's about following the sound and increasing ability over time.
Thanks for thy tip
Damn
Im considering buying a small bore long island mouthpiece for jazz trombone perhaps their 450 standard, im not sure if you've been able to try this kind before but from experience with their other models is this something you would recommend? How do they feel compared to for common models ive seen such as Bach mouthpieces.
I haven't spent time with their small bore options yet. However, compared to Bachs the rims are very smooth and rounded
Every register has its challenges . I gave up after losing top front teeth , that was nearly 30 years ago 5 yrs ago i started again , like starting from scratch. The low register , the pedals ect were very dificult . Not so now , the higher range now that has been a massive challenge at one point id struggle to play anything after trying to hit that Bb C . Its only in the last mnth or so that ive started playing the upper range with more ease . I do find if i spend too much time up there my lower range suffers.
Yes it does 👌
I gotta ask, brother… why? I’ve been playing for over 50 years, and I’ve never once felt the compulsion to play a chart like that. To each his own, but where is the melody?
the real melody is the friends we make along the way
Cause it's fun shut up nerd
Why not huh? It’s contemporary music on steroids!
@@EddieDoesBrass because you asked, it may be notated, but nothing like that is even remotely “musical.” Be honest, it’s little more than charted noise. Anyone who calls this kind of composition “music” is admiring the proverbial emperor’s new clothes. That dog don’t hunt.
there's different music for different people and no need to make a hierarchy out of it. it's ok not to like it, but please don't decide for everyone that it's no good
holy moly. amazing playing!!! i’m going to college for music as a trombone player
thanks! best of luck on the degree as well - if you ever find yourself around the University of Oklahoma come say hi!
@@WilliamLangI go to band in Yukon which is one of the best bands in Oklahoma. I'm hoping to get to Oklahoma University like you
@@freddyjackhammer8274 I've heard good things about Yukon. There are a few really great high schools and a lot of outstanding potential in Oklahoma. I'm looking forward to getting to know more people, so come by anytime for a lesson! just email me to set up a time
This did not help at all
I'll try to make one for basic triple tonguing one day
can hear it kinda sharp... still amazing though 🎉
Better sharp than out of tune!
@@WilliamLang ur not wrong though. my band teacher told me the same thing 🤣
Wow 💪🏽🔥🎶 Haces algún ejercicio de respiración en específico para poder mandar a esa velocidad el aire?? ..
I don't do any specific breathing exercises, and I also don't rely on air speed to play higher ranges
@@WilliamLangIf you don't rely on air speed, are you just "squeezing" your lips together to get a controlled "squeak"?🐁🐀
when i try to buzz up there on a cut out rim mouthpiece, i don't notice any difference in the chops. i think it might be more analogous to whistling, where the tongue arches higher (I can also whistle higher than most world championship whistlers seem to go, but i don't know if it's an exact correlation)

Did I see you at ITF on Saturday with a full beard? I did buy the LI Brass mp #600 Chimera and love it! Doug Elliott gave me a Conn shank for my 1966 Conn 8H with a wider 104M rim. Thanks for your tutorials!
Wasn't able to be there this year! The LI Brass mouthpieces are really great though - I'm happy to be working with them
Amateur orchestral trombonist here, practicing and practicing for our own Bolero concert next month, and really glad to find your two videos! Naturally, we're worlds apart in terms of "living" the instrument, but the facility with which you play the piece is really inspiring, gives me something to aim for beyond "squeeze and hope" 😜 Specifically, I was intrigued how you changed the slide positions in the run down from the top Db between the first and this video - this version, playing C, Bb and A in 3rd, then switching to 4th for the G and F feels easier to me (in the previous one I think it was 2-3-5-4-3-2(+)-1), which is slick, but felt harder for me to control. Glad I came across this video in time! Thanks also for letting us in on your mouthpiece explorations, always fascinating!
Thanks so much for watching! That slide trick on the way down works great - it's all about keeping half steps on the same partial. I hope your Bolero goes well!
Ugh I will always be a slut for carnival of Venice. Sometimes when I’m hooked up to the aux I go crazy with the bob mchesney version 🤯 windows down whole towns gotta hear that ish
😂😂😂 whats up?

That long Island mouthpiece you describe sounds like it could be almost their equivalent of the schilke 51D. I made all state in highschool playing a 51D, despite everyone telling me that was a euphonium mouthpiece. It's so easy to play and has such a dark sound on a large bore tenor trombone. So many people would compliment my sound with it, yet when people asked what I played with they would suddenly act like "that mouthpiece doesn't sound right on a trombone" lol. So many people have what I call "mouthpiece dysphoria" where they let the numbers dictate what they play. Or where they constantly think "just one more slight change to my mouthpiece and I will be perfect" lol it's almost like a person addicted to plastic surgery
i pretty much completely agree with you! i played a 51D in high school as well, and found that deep mouthpieces just work well for me. I have a studio of about 10 musicians now, and i'd say 4-5 of them sound great on deep, euphonium style mouthpieces, 4-5 of them work well with more conventional depth, and 1 really vibes with a V-shaped mouthpiece. everyone's different, and the numbers by themselves don't make a difference
@@WilliamLang I think many players would love the 51D if you called it something like "5G symphony series" lol I feel the same way about deep cups. My motto was always "deeper, not wider" but I had to change my way of thinking when Bass Trombone became my main love lol
bass is a different beast altogether! i just found a Momo 60 from a japan atelier that works really well for me on the instrument though! blew my GP6 out of the water
@@WilliamLang What on Earth is a Momo? I need to get back into buying mouthpieces I don't need. I've been buying a bunch of novelty brass instruments lately. I live in Conway, where you got your trombone. Lots of old unique horns come through here in Arkansas for some odd reason. I got an old 5 valve saxhorn in a flea market in Hot Springs, AR this year. It needs major work to be playable but I'm gonna post a video of it when it works. Mouthpiece addiction is cheaper than weird instrument addiction lol I need to go back
so momo is this atelier in japan - i never heard of them but bought a mouthpiece blind second hand from someone. Conway is great! also the hottest temperatures i've ever felt in the US during ITF 2022
Yeah dude!
That high note is higher than snoop dogg 🤣🤣
Man what the hell stop. Youre crazy
I absolutely love the way you approach the horn and exploring it!
Thank you very much!
high range tips?
i gotcha ua-cam.com/video/EL1-8GWSj2w/v-deo.html
I’m working on the piece trying to get my speed up the slide positions are messing with my head, I can toung fast enough just the speed of the slide is messing me up
What horn do you play on?
That's my school's bass trombone, an Edwards 454 with a rose bell, alongside a nice Momo 60* mouthpiece from a boutique Japanese maker
Sounds great. What Mic do you use on these videos?
that's just video from an android cell phone - no external mic
